The four things we built ELEVO around

A niche, technology, recurring relationships and international reach. The advice that shaped how ELEVO was built, and how it shows up in the work we do for clients.

A presentation to a team in a loft office

Years ago someone gave me advice about building a business of real value. There were four components, he said, and the companies that had all four were the ones that grew and lasted. I have carried that list through every company I have owned or invested in, and it is the frame we used to build ELEVO.

A niche you can be the best at

Ours is the combination of strategic counsel and business advisory, delivered by people who have been lawyers, owners and investors. There are not many attorneys who became entrepreneurs and then came back to counsel, and that combination is the point. The legal question and the business question are usually the same question asked two ways.

Technology that makes the service better

The second component is being technology enabled: what are you doing with technology to deliver the product or service in a better way? For us that means using AI to draft and organize so that we spend our time on judgment. It also means not charging a client five times to craft a document we have already crafted.

Recurring relationships, not the next invoice

The third is recurring revenue. A business that is always chasing the next customer never gets to invest in the ones it has. Monthly and project engagements let us plan around a client, learn the business deeply and be there before the problem instead of after it.

International reach

The fourth component surprises people: some level of international exposure. It makes a company bigger than its local market, opens more opportunities for innovation and, frankly, makes it more resilient. I had done business in Mexico and Cuba before ELEVO, and we brought in people who had built careers across the US-Mexico border. Enterprise risk and intelligence, and cross-border market advisory, grew out of that.

How it shows up for a client

  • Outside general counsel for companies that need the judgment but not the full-time cost.
  • M&A and capital transactions handled by people who have been on the buy side, the sell side and the investor side.
  • Value acceleration work that improves the business now and prepares it for a strong exit later.
  • Enterprise risk and intelligence for companies operating in Mexico and Latin America.

We are a relatively new firm, a little over a year in earnest, and that is an advantage. We do not have twenty years of billing habits to undo. We get to build it the way the advice said to.
